Koalas

Fun Facts

When settlers first came upon koalas in Australia, they mistakenly thought koalas were small bears. Today we know koalas are marsupials, more closely related to kangaroos and wombats. Being marsupials, koalas keep their young in a pouch until they are fully developed.

Koalas have five digits on each paw, and much like us they have igits which are opposable too. However, instead of one thumbe they have two, this helps them hold firmly onto branches and grip their food. The second and third digits on their hind paws are also fused togeter to form a grooming claw.

Koalas are mostly nocturnal animals. Most of their time is spent sleeping because it requires a lot of energy to digest their meal. Although they are nocturnal animals, they sleep part of the night and move around during the day. They sleep 18-20 hours a day.
